The Ventura River Ecosystem Project has focused on a wide range of approaches to stakeholder involvement in ecosystem-based management of the local watershed. The project provides a critical example of EBM implementation in the face of strong urban stresses and threats, including large-scale dam removal and alleviating pressures from development and runoff.
Initiative Background
The Ventura River Ecosystem Project is led by the Surfrider Foundation. The project developed numerous initiatives that include local, state, and federal government agencies as well as local conservation groups and stakeholders.
The project’s efforts have focused on specific activities in the Ventura River watershed, including coastal management, dam removal, the urban watershed, and integrated water management. After over a decade of collaboration and planning, the Matilija Dam Ecosystem Restoration Project received Congressional Authorization in 2007, and final design efforts are currently being completed. The Surfers’ Point Managed Retreat Project focuses on restoring coastal function and enhancing public use of the local beach area. Emerging urban watershed and integrated water management programs are aimed at reducing harmful runoff and improving water quality.
EBM Approach
The Ventura River Ecosystem Project is strongly involved in the efforts detailed above as well as other initiatives in the Ventura River watershed, to promote ecosystem-based principles surrounding community involvement, science-based management and improved water quality, among others. The project continues to pursue resources to implement plans associated with the projects highlighted above, and further develop EBM of the Ventura River ecosystem and demonstrate its effectiveness.
